Galion City School District Curriculum Director Dr. Sandy Powell is calling an end to a 40-year career in education. The Galion Board of Education formally accepted her retirement when her contract expires on July 31 of this year.
Superintendent Mark Stefanik said he, “sadly accepted a tough retirement letter to receive.” He was also speaking of the retirement of longtime Galion employee and special education secretary Jeraldine Deffendoll, effective July 1.
“Very veteran and very valuable,” Stefanik called Powell and Deffendoll. “Both will be tough to replace.”
In the financial report, Treasurer Charlene Parkinson reported a cash balance of $3.575 million. $2,000,084 of that is in the general fund. The latest round of casino money clocked in at $47,900, with $97,135 having come in year to date. In the last month the school brought in $1.083 million and spent $1.411 million.
The board also approved a contract of $3,250 with Rader Environment Services to handle the disposal of obsolete chemicals from the chemistry lab. Board President Jennifer Kuns thought such an action might be appropriate for the bus garage. The board could not add that inspection to the contract but it will be considered for the future.
