GALION — Galion City Council had a productive evening for their meeting Tuesday.

To begin, council passed Ordinance No. 2020-54, which amends section 1193.06 of the codified ordinances of the City of Galion relating to street alignments.

The section that was removed stated that the maximum length of a cul-de-sac shall be 600-feet, measured from the centerline of the intersecting street to the middle of the turnaround. Many cul-de-sacs in Galion exceed the 600-foot limit.

“We are essentially removing the restrictions on the cul-de-sac. By removing this section, we are allowing for the flexibility of future projects, so that way it would be more of a benefit,” council member Mr. Richart said.

Council also passed Ordinance No. 2020-58, which authorizes the safety-service director to enter into an agreement with GPD group for professional engineering services related to asset valuation of the 69 KV transmission facilities. The cost of this is not to exceed $55,800 and will be paid from the Electric Fund.

This ordinance is a necessary next step in moving towards the advertisement for the proposed sale of the city’s transmission — part of the electrical system. This would evaluate the system in terms of its economic value. The city has seven miles of transmission line.

This ordinance was passed with an emergency clause so this project can be started as soon as possible.

The final ordinance discussed, but not passed for the evening, was Ordinance No. 2020-59, which amends Ordinance No. 2019-85 by moving funds from unappropriated to the CDBG fund.

“I would describe this as activating some dormant funds within the city’s accounts — right around $30,000 of CDBG money — that I believe is from 2011, but it’s been in a dormant state,” Mayor Tom O’Leary said. “There’s the project that has been bumping around in the uptown area which involves two steps, and one is the demolition of the old bakery building on Harding Way East, then ultimately leveling that property into a parking lot. The Elks would like to make an East facing entrance into their banquet room.”

The next scheduled regular council meeting is September 22 at 7 p.m.
