GALION — Speed limits on state highways were the topics of discussion during the regular meeting of the Galion Streets, Alleys, Trees and Bridges Committee.
Committee members Mark Triplett and Bill Comerfield discussed three items on the agenda, including the results of a speed study performed on Ohio 598 from Brandt Road to Timberlane Drive.
The area currently is listed as a 50-miles-per-hour zone, and the Ohio Department of Transportation recommendation was to reduce the speed limit to 40 miles per hour.
Both committee members agreed to take the issue to council for a vote at its next regular meeting.
In other speed-related discussion, the committee decided to ask council to approve a speed study to be completed on Ohio 61 North, where the speed limit is 50 miles per hour.
According to Galion Safety-Service Director Nicole Ward said legislation from council is needed for ODOT to carry out the study. She said she believed all speed studies by ODOT were completed without charge.
The final order of business was to address trash dumping on Cummings Road.
Ward told the committee that a sign could be made with the city’s ordinance on dumping, and the sign could be placed in the location.
Both committee members agree to the course of action.
During the meeting, committee member Tammy Siclair-Erlsten was absent due to illness.
The next council meeting is June 26 at 7 p.m. and the next committee meeting is July 12 at the same time.
