Press release

The Galion City School District Board of Education approved the calendar for the 2017-2018 school year during its regular monthly meeting Monday, Feb 13.

The opening day for students in grades kindergarten through twelve will be Monday, August 21. The end of the first semester is set for the day before Winter Break on Thursday, Dec. 21, 2017. The last day of school for students will be Thursday, May 24, 2018 with graduation being held Friday, June 1, 2018.

“The administration and staff worked together to develop a school calendar that is advantageous for students,” said Superintendent Jim Grubbs. “We will continue the one-time monthly two-hour delayed start for students to allow our staff to work through vital professional development activities to better serve our students.”

The board voted to accept more than $12,000 in donations to various programs in the district. The largest portion of donations received was from the Arthur J. Freese Charitable Trust for the high school swim program, and the Ohio Civil Service Employee Association (OCSEA) and Galion Boosters Club to help provide financial assistance for the 8th grade Washington D.C. trip and the 6th grade Mohican Outdoor Camp.

“The financial support our students receive from community groups and organizations is absolutely amazing,” said Grubbs. “Outstanding financial support from the community allows our students the opportunity to extend the classroom and gain invaluable knowledge and experience not normally available in the traditional classroom.”

The board approved all other items as presented on the agenda. The next meeting of the Galion City School District Board of Education will be a special meeting beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the Galion Middle School computer lab Monday, February 27, and the next regular monthly meeting will begin at the same time in the computer lab Monday, March 13.
