GALION, OH (CRAWFORD COUNTY NOW)—The Friends of the Galion Big Four Depot (FBFD) are set to host their annual Depot Day on Saturday, May 4th, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Galion Big Four Depot, located at 127 N. Washington Street. This free event is open to the public and will feature a variety of activities centered around train history and community engagement.
Depot Day will showcase train history displays from various local and area entities, including a train safety info table by Ohio Operation Lifesavers. The Crawford County Arts Council will also host a train art activity table, providing a creative outlet for attendees.
The event will include presentations in the pavilion on the depot grounds throughout the day. At 11 a.m., Thomas Palmer will present “Rails to History: The Remarkable Life of a Galion Locomotive Engineer.” At 1 p.m., Mike Hocker will share insights in his talk, “Here at the Depot Through the Years.”
Depot Day will also feature sale items, including train calendars, books, and train station cut-outs. A fundraiser raffle will be held, and new this year, attendees will have the opportunity to purchase train-themed t-shirts from “This, That & the Other”, a local Galion business.
Musical entertainment will begin at 12:15 p.m., provided by the Galion Alumni/Community Band directed by Brian Treisch. Food and drinks will be available for purchase from The Messy Bun Food Cart, and Kettle Krunch food cart will be selling kettle corn.
FBFD is extending a special invitation to all former employees of the Big Four Depot to share their oral or written memories/stories at the event. There are plans to videotape/record these stories for future publication.
