BUCYRUS-The Friendship Trail property land use was the hot topic of Thursday’s Bucyrus City Council Joint Regular Committee meeting. Many concerned residents of Brentwood Street voiced their objections of the proposed building of apartments adjacent to Friendship Trail.
One of the passionate residents Matt Rindfuss of Brentwood Street, expressed his dismay over the lack of research done into the history of the land. “The (builder of my house) told me the land you want to build these apartments on can never built upon because it used to be a landfill. Is that true?-that’s the old Crawford County Landfill.” The council members relayed that they were not aware that this could be a possibility. The council went onto explain that they are in the information-gathering stage and that no decision has been made or any actual planning initiated with regards to the Friendship Trail property. Councilman Kevin Myers responded to the concerned citizens, “One of the things I like about this whole process is there’s a whole bunch of steps and hoops that do give you the right and the ability to state your opinion, and for us to hear those.”
Also discussed at Thursday’s meeting, were safety concerns regarding some doors that are locked during the day at the city building. Law Director Rob Ratliff talked about derelict properties the city owns which are to be recommended for demolition. Along the lines of financial matters, funding sources for Pines Reservoir and a quote for a new city garbage truck was presented.
A need for an active list of individuals who have successfully completed the Civil Service test was brought forward, with more discussion to follow at the next meeting. Life insurance premiums for the council members was reviewed at the meeting, before their adjournment.
