Press release
Mary Ellen Withrow, 40th treasurer of the United States, will speak at 6 p.m. June 29 at the Bucyrus Public Library, 200 E. Mansfield St. The presentation by Withrow, a Marion native and current resident, is presented by the Mid-Ohio Progressives.
Withrow was the first woman elected to the Elgin Local school board, beginning her career in public service in 1969. She served as treasurer of Marion County for two terms and was elected treasurer of Ohio for three terms before being selected by President Bill Clinton to serve as U.S treasurer from 1994 to 2001. Her many honors include being named the nation’s Most Valuable State Public Official, induction into the Ohio Women’s Hall of Fame and serving as president of the National Association of State Treasurers.
Mid-Ohio Progressives, a local group that formed earlier this year, will also have redistricting reform petitions available for signing. MOP is working with the coalition trying to get a constitutional amendment on the ballot that would eliminate or greatly reduce partisan gerrymandering in Ohio.
