The Bucyrus Fire Department did not rescue a cat from a tree, but they did save unsuspecting pedestrians from crumbling chimney pieces Tuesday afternoon.

The fire department responded to safety hazard call on North Sandusky Avenue around 2:30. Pieces of a smokestack were scattered across the roof of 105 N. Sandusky Ave., posing a threat to unaware pedestrians and motorists.

The Bucyrus Police Department blocked off North Sandusky Avenue from the square down to Mary Street while the fire department stabilized its ladder truck. Two firefighters extended the ladder’s bucket up to the roof to collect two large pieces of a crumbling smokestack and carefully crept across the shingled roof to gather smaller disintegrating chunks of the chimney.
