A sad morning led to an even more devastating afternoon for one family.
The Bucyrus Fire Department responded to 17 Waterford Glen around 2:30 Wednesday afternoon concerning a trailer home that had caught fire.
Alex Miller Jr. had recently purchased the home where he lived and took care of his 77-year-old mother Mary Miller. Alex Miller had been on his way home from the veterinarian after having to have one of their cats euthanized earlier that day when he got the call that his trailer home caught fire.
Alex Miller’s sister, Katherine Short, said her mother had been home when the fire started. Though they had installed smoke and heat detectors in the home, she said they never went off until her mother opened a bedroom door. Short said a neighbor heard her mother yelling and called 911.
Mary Miller escaped the home without harm. She was soon reunited with her other cat when a firefighter rescued it from the smoking trailer. Also recovered were Mary’s wedding rings.
Fire Chief Jay Keller reported that one of the bedrooms of the 1980 house trailer was completely destroyed. He was unable to comment on the cause of the fire at the time. The fire remains under investigation.
