BUCYRUS — The Bucyrus Fire Department responded to two fires resulting in notable damages during the weekend.
Firefighters responded to a report of a structure fire Sunday at 11:42 p.m. in the 900 block of Elm Street with a woman trapped inside yelling for help. Two fire engines and an additional truck were used in the response.
Upon arrival, firefighters found the resident’s neighbors helped get the woman out of the house. When entering the house, firefighters found the living room to be on fire.
The blaze was extinguished, and salvage and overhaul were performed.
The cause of the fire was found to be a lit candle in unsanitary living conditions, and damages were estimated to be approximately $45,000. The scene was cleared at 1:48 a.m.
Earlier in the weekend, crews responded to a fire in the 200 block of Hayes Avenue on Saturday at 8:33 p.m.
The department responded with two fire engines and a ladder truck after a resident returned home and found the building full of smoke. No one was in the residence at the time of the fire, except for three pets.
Firefighters found smoldering debris in the residence on a stovetop. The official cause was found to be home decorations which had been placed on a hot or still active stovetop burner. Damages were estimated to be approximately $14,000.
Two dogs and one cat died as a result of the fire.
The Humane Society Serving Crawford County and the American Red Cross were notified of the incident.
The scene was cleared at 10:09 p.m.
