CRESTLINE — As the summer winds down, the Crawford Park District is gearing up for a fall season full of fun, educational activities and events for all ages.

Upcoming events in September include:

Homeschool in Nature: Stream Study, Thursday, September 5 at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. at Lowe-Volk Park, 2401 State Route 598

To kick off the school year, the Crawford Park District invites Homeschoolers to do a stream study to check for macroinvertebrates.  Bring your boots or water shoes and prepare to get in the water. Classes are limited to 20 students per session. Please call the Crawford Park District to reserve a spot for your 5 to 12-year-old by September 4.

Monarch Tagging: Thursday, September 5 at 5:30 p.m. at the Buckeye Central Outdoor Learning Lab, 938 South Kibler St., New Washington

The Crawford Park District invites you to learn about the life cycle of the Monarch butterfly, its need for milkweed plants, and their amazing migration to Mexico. Program participants will have an opportunity to help Kansas University with Monarch migration and population research by attempting to capture, tag, and release Monarch butterflies. All ages welcome. Nets will be provided.  The Buckeye Central Outdoor Learning Lab is located on the campus of Buckeye Central School.

Sunflower Origami: Tuesday, September 10 at 5:30 p.m. at Lowe-Volk Park, 2401 State Route 598

Crawford Park District volunteer, Candy Yocum, found another fun nature-inspired craft for us to make. Let’s try our hand at origami this time. This ancient art uses square colored paper with several folds to create a delicate flower. Participants should be ages 8 and up. Please call the Crawford Park District to reserve a spot by September 9.

Wild Wednesday: Wednesday, September 11 at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. at Lowe-Volk Park, 2401 State Route 598

Come to the Crawford Park District’s Nature Center and enjoy an hour of nature exploration!  Program topics will vary and may include a story, short hike, craft, or a visit from an animal.  For pre-schoolers and their parents.  Come dressed for the weather.  Morning and afternoon programs will be similar, just choose the time that best fits your schedule.

Toddler Trot: Monarchs: Thursday, September 12 at  5:30 p.m. at Lowe-Volk Park, 2401 State Route 598, Crestline

Observing the changes that occur in a butterfly’s life are wonderful ways to engage young minds in our natural world. The Crawford Park District invites you to join Josh Dyer and McKinley to learn about the Monarch butterfly and go on a hike to observe the caterpillars munching on their favorite food; milkweed! For kids not quite in school and younger.

Recycling, Saturday, September 14 from 9 a.m. to noon at Lowe-Volk Park, 2401 State Route 598

The Colonel Crawford Lions Club and the Friends of the Crawford Park District will have a RECYCLE DAY the second Saturday of each month through the year.

We will be accepting:

Clear/brown/green/blue glass (separate by color)

#1 (PETE) plastics

#2 (HDPE) plastics (colors do not have to be separated)

Newspaper/magazines/office paper/junk mail

Steel cans

Aluminum cans

Household batteries

Eyeglasses

CFL lightbulbs – from households only, no businesses please

Any recyclables taken to the Crawford Park District, outside of the second Saturday of every month do not get credited to the Park District. If you would like the money generated from recycling to go to them, you must take your recyclables to the Park District during their monthly collections.

Conservation Heroes: Monarch Butterfly, Saturday, September 14 at 2 p.m. at Lowe-Volk Park, 2401 State Route 598

Join Crawford Park District Naturalist Abby to learn why Monarch butterflies are endangered, as well as what we can do to help this animal make a comeback in the wild. This 3-part program will be a continuation of the spring series; bring your cape, or each new participant will receive their own cape, and then try to collect all three buttons to place on the cape. You will also get a chance to tag and release a Monarch Butterfly for scientists to track if they make the long journey to Mexico.

Yoga in the Park, Sunday, September 15 at 3 p.m. at Lowe-Volk Park, 2401 State Route 598

Join Instructor and Crawford Park District volunteer Kay Smith for an hour of outdoor Yoga with beautiful Lowe-Volk Park as the backdrop. Moving gracefully from one pose to the next, while focusing on balance and breath, enjoy a full mind-body experience. No registration is necessary. Bring your mat and water. In the event of inclement weather, the class will take place in the Nature Center.

 Canoeing, Tuesday, September 17 at 6 p.m. at Neff Reservoir on Route 98, Bucyrus

The Crawford Park District invites you to join Josh and Lisa for an evening paddle around Neff Reservoir.  After a lesson on some canoeing basics and safety, we will take to the water! Pre-registration is required by September 16.
