Bucyrus safety officials responded to a structure fire in the 900 block of Reid St. in Bucyrus.

Bucyrus Fire Capt. Steven Sargel said the fire ignited in the residence’s kitchen and spread from there.

Resident Glenn Pickens said he and his children were making cheeseburgers and French fries when some grease splattered. Pickens said he thought he cleaned it all up, but when he left the room and returned, his son said there was something glowing underneath the dishwasher.

Pickens then called 9-1-1.

Pickens’ 12-, 11- and 5-year-old children were safely evacuated from the residence. Pickens’ fiancé Patsy Henry was not home when the fire ignited.

The family’s dogs, cat and guinea pig also were safely evacuated.

The residence sustained smoke and water damage.

Bucyrus Fire and Police departments and Life Support Team EMS responded to the scene.
