BUCYRUS — Students at Bucyrus Elementary School spent time learning about safety for Fire Prevention Week.

Bucyrus Fire Department Capt. Steve Sargel met with students in preschool through third grade to show them what to do in a hazardous situation.

“Fire Prevention Week is the perfect time to teach the kids about different things that can cause fires,” Sargel said. “This is the age where they should be learning to know how to prevent fires and how to react if there is one.”

Sargel told the students of different hazards that could lead to a fire, such as electronics near water, too many cords overloading an outlet, faulty appliances and more. He also spoke of different types of fires such as electric and grease.

Students also were told of the dangers of playing with matches.

While discussing what to do in case of a fire, Sargel told the students how to gain rescuers’ attention, if stuck on an elevated floor of a house, by waving curtains, blankets or other materials out the window and by loudly yelling.

He also shared the importance of a family meeting playing for accountability, so firefighters know if anyone is trapped inside.

Students showed off some of their knowledge by saying to call 911 in an emergency, to “Stop, Drop and Roll” if clothing catches on fire and to crawl of there is a lot of smoke.

Sargel also said families should always be sure to have working smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

Sargel used a Hazard House demonstration kit donated by the Bucyrus Aladdin Shriners Club.

The 2018 Fire Prevention Week is Oct. 7-13.
