Many Bucyrus Elementary School students never have the opportunity to see livestock up close and personal. Thanks to a partnership between the school and Crawford Soil and Water Conservation District, students had the opportunity to experience Livestock Live Oct. 7.
Livestock Live is a free program offered to schools through the Crawford Soil and Water Conservation District. This program is part of the Elementary School’s Science and Social Studies standards.
“This kind of program is important for students because it allows them to experience lessons in a different way,” Kindergarten teacher Amy Hawkins said. “Livestock Live also meets the standards we are teaching in the classroom, and the students really enjoy the experience that Diane and her team bring to our school.”
Animals the students experienced include a calf, pig, sheep, goat, chicken and turkey. Eagle Nest Poultry, Pfeifer Dairy, Underwood Farms, Hord Family Farms and Hall Farms graciously donated their animals for this program.
“There is a huge disconnect when it comes to understanding where their (students’) food comes from,” Crawford Soil and Water Conservation District Education Coordinator Diane Sand said. “Our goal is that students will be able to recognize the animals, know they are raised right here in Crawford County and will know the products we get from each one.”
