At different points during a school year, the Bucyrus Elementary School Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO) conducts contests throughout the building. One of the more popular is the Box Tops competition, where students and their families collect Box Tops from General Mills’ products and bring them in for collection.
The most recent contest netted the PTO an astounding 17,927 Box Tops. When redeemed, the Box Tops are worth ten cents ($.10) each making the total monies collected $1,792.70.
“We routinely run the Box Tops competition as a way to promote grade-level spirit,” PTO President Renee Stratton said. “The students and teachers work tirelessly to collect these items, and it helps our organization collect substantial dollars to support the efforts of our teachers to further educate Bucyrus Elementary students.”
The grade-level winners for the most recent contest included:
• Fifth Grade – Mrs. Fruth (445)
• Fourth Grade – Mrs. Potter (765)
• Third Grade – Mrs. Haldeman (1168)
• Second Grade – Mrs. Duplaga (762)
• First Grade – Mrs. Pfeifer (934)
• Kindergarten – Mrs. Adams (978)
• Pre-School – Mrs. Leighty’s AM class (281)
• MH Rooms – Mrs. Gwirtz (639)
“Fund raisers, like the Box Tops contest, are vitally important to our PTO in their efforts to support our teachers and students,” Elementary Principal Todd Roll said. “The monies raised by the PTO not only support individual teachers’ classroom efforts, but they also fund events like our annual Right to Read week Author Visit and Family Night, as well as the annual PTO Fun Night. I would like to thank all those who contributed Box Tops to this contest, as well as the PTO for their unwavering support of the students and teachers at BES.”
There are several ways you can help the Bucyrus Elementary School students and teachers. Families who may not personally have children in our school, businesses, civic clubs, and church/community groups who are not currently collecting for their own benefit are encouraged to collect Box Tops and submit them to our school.
