BUCYRUS — An elderly couple was rescued from a structure fire at a residence in Bucyrus on Monday night.
Bucyrus Fire Department firefighters were dispatched at 11:21 p.m. and met members of the Bucyrus Police Department, Crawford County Sheriff’s Office and Portsmouth Emergency Ambulance Service at 436 Plymouth Street.
Original reports from a 911 call were of a woman in bed that was on fire.
Upon arrival, firefighters found BPD officers attempting to convince an 80-year-old man to leave the residence. The man reportedly refused to leave due to his 78-year-old wife still being in the residence and officers could not enter the residence due to not having necessary safety gear.
Firefighters entered the residence with their breathing apparatuses and got the man to leave with officers. They then searched the bedroom but did not locate the woman. She was then found in the bathroom.
The woman was evacuated from the residence and both she and her husband were transported to Bucyrus Community Hospital and later another hospital for smoke inhalation and heat-related injuries.
She was considered to be in serious condition.
According to BFD, the fire appeared to originate in the couple’s second-story bedroom, but the cause remains under investigation. Fire damage was limited to the second story, but smoke and water damage occurred throughout the house.
A cat was unaccounted for.
The scene was cleared at 1:51 a.m.
