BUCYRUS, OH (CRAWFORD COUNTY NOW)—On Saturday at approximately 8:25 PM, Bucyrus police officers responded to a reported domestic violence situation on the north side of the city.
While en route, officers received an urgent 911 call from a female resident on the south side, who reported that her ex-boyfriend, armed with a rifle, was attempting to break into her home where her current boyfriend and their 9-year-old child were present.

Lt. Keegan continued to the initial north end call, while Officer Wireman was diverted to the high-priority situation on the south side, prompting assistance from the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office.
Upon arrival at the scene, Officer Wireman found the suspect, identified as 33-year-old Daniel Hammond of Bucyrus, actively trying to enter the residence through the front door.
Officer Wireman ordered Hammond to get on the ground, to which he initially complied. He was taken into custody without further incident upon the arrival of deputies. A loaded .50 caliber hunting rifle was discovered in the yard near Hammond.
However, during the transfer from a Bucyrus Police Department cruiser to that of a deputy for transport to the Crawford County Justice Center, Hammond managed to reposition his handcuffs to the front and became combative, striking officers with both hands and feet.
Hammond was ultimately transported to the Crawford County Justice Center and faces several charges, including aggravated burglary (Felony 1), domestic violence (Misdemeanor 1), and assault on a police officer (Felony 4). The case has been submitted to the Crawford County Prosecutor’s Office for further review.
