In observance and reverence of Veteran’s Day, the Bucyrus City School District will host special programs and assemblies at both the elementary and secondary school Nov. 11. These programs are intended to not only honor local veterans both active and reserve, but to also help Bucyrus students better understand the significance behind this national holiday.
Current Director of Special Education, and former United States Army Sergeant, Robert Chevalier will keynote an 8 a.m. assembly at the Secondary School. Chevalier, a veteran of the Persian Gulf War, began his military service as a carpenter and mason and later served as an interrogator. He comes from a long line of servicemen, which includes his grandfather who served aboard the U.S.S. Indianapolis during World War II.
Additional assembly and Veteran’s Day activities at the Secondary School will include a short video presentation and musical performance from the band and choir.
“We try to put something together each year to explain to the students what Veterans Day means,” Secondary School Principal Dr. Mark Burke said, “and to remind them why we should be so grateful to our veterans.”
Later that day, kindergarten teacher Nancy Lipscomb will kick off a 2:15 p.m. assembly at the elementary. Assembly activities will include a flag ceremony, Veteran’s Day poems recited by students, a vocal musical performance by the entire school of “My Country Tis of Thee” and the introduction of students’ family members who served in the military.
Mrs. Kim Young, a United State Army veteran, will make a special presentation to students about her experiences during her service in the military. The Color Guard and students will close out the day’s activities with a flag folding ceremony.
“It’s important for our younger students to start to understand at this early age how to be good citizens by honoring those who help and serve us,” event coordinator Scott Tinnermeier said, “and to remember those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms.”
The district would like to thank all the special guests for making these assemblies possible. Please contact Dr. Mark Burke at mburke@bucyrusschools.org for more information about Secondary School activities and Scott Tinnermeier at stinnermeier@bucyrusschools.org for more information about Elementary School activities.
