Dayton Mayor Nan Whaley, who is seeking the Democratic nomination for governor, will speak at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Bucyrus Public Library. Whaley’s talk is hosted by the Mid-Ohio Progressives. The group will also be collecting donations for the victims of Hurricane Harvey.

Earlier this year Whaley and the city of Dayton filed a lawsuit against major pharmaceutical manufacturers and distributors. “The heroin epidemic is no accident,” Whaley said in June. “It did not just happen. It started with the drug companies.” Whaley has been endorsed by the IUE-CWA (Industrial Division of Communications Workers of America), EMILY’s List, the mayors of Cincinnati, Chillicothe and Athens and two Columbus City Council members, Jaiza N. Page and Elizabeth Brown, daughter of U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown.

In addition to collecting donations for hurricane relief, the group will be gathering signatures to get redistricting reform on the ballot. Whaley’s talk is the fourth in a series of presentations sponsored by MOP. Also scheduled are We Are Ohio, a labor and community coalition, at 6 p.m. Sept. 28 at the library and a candidates/issues night at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 5 at the Lowe-Volk Nature Center.
