The DARE program and leadership development highlighted the Bucyrus City School District Board of Education regular monthly meeting agenda August 24. The board voted to approve a $2,000 donation to the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office for the Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) program.

Deputy Christopher Martin has been teaching the DARE curriculum to Bucyrus sixth grade students the past three school years.

“Sheriff Kent asked each of the school districts in Crawford County to make this donation to help offset the costs for materials and supplies the students receive during the DARE program,” said Superintendent Kevin Kimmel. “We are very grateful for the continued partnership with the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office in providing the DARE program for our students.”

The board also approved an agreement with Steven Mohr to serve as facilitator and instructor for the Youth Max Program. The program will build upon the habits students learn in The Leader in Me program at Bucyrus Elementary School.

“We are excited to expand our leadership development efforts to our Secondary School students with the help of Mr. Mohr,” said Kimmel. “This is a home run for our district because the total cost of the program will be reimbursed through the county’s Community Connectors Grant.”

The board approved an agreement with The Ohio Arts Council for the continuation of the TeachArtsOhio program. The district is entering its third year of participation in the program.

“We are grateful for the opportunity to partner again this year with The Ohio Arts Council and participate in the TeachArtsOhio program,” said Kimmel. “Vicki Murphy and Nancy Kangas will be working with students in the Elementary and Secondary Schools, and I’m excited to see the work that develops as a result of their involvement in working with our students.”

The board approved all other agenda items as presented. The next regular monthly meeting of the Bucyrus City School District Board of Education will begin at 7:00 p.m. in the Lincoln Administrative Center boardroom Thursday, Sept. 28.
