BUCYRUS — A garage fire called for a response by emergency crews Wednesday morning.

The Bucyrus Fire Department, Portsmouth Emergency Ambulance Service and Bucyrus Police Department responded shortly after 7 a.m. to the 600 block of West Perry Street.

BFD Capt. Steve Sargel said flames were visible from outside the detached garage when crews arrived at the scene.

According to BFD Lt. Eric McNutt, both homeowners were at work and two juvenile females were at the residence getting ready for school when the call was made. A neighbor said the girls saw the fire and ran to the neighbor’s residence and the neighbor called 911.

One of the responding engines needed to use an alley off Jump Street to access the garage.

A van and small-engine items were visible in the garage. McNutt said the items may have smoke and heat damage but did not appear to have any direct fire damage.

He said most of the damage was limited to the garage’s walls. The homeowner’s insurance company will need to inspect the building before it may be deemed a complete loss or salvageable, McNutt said.

McNutt reported the cause of the fire remained under investigation.

No injuries to the residents or responding crew members were reported as a result of the fire.
