BUCYRUS — Many residents and motorists may notice work being completed on Plymouth Street from Sandusky Avenue to the Bucyrus city limits.
According to Jeff Branch of Elite Excavating, who also is acting as the foreman of the project, the work is a continuation of work performed on the street in 2018.
He said the largest single area of work, a sidewalk replacement between Beverly Drive and Plum Street, is an adjustment being made from the original project.
Branch said the sidewalk previously was raised to assist in better drainage and water runoff. The raising of the height of the sidewalk put the walkway above the specification to allow for a ramp to be put in from the sidewalk to the area residents’ private walks and concrete steps were installed.
Ohio Department of Transportation Area Engineer Ed Wetzer said the steps put in by the contractor were to code but were not part of the original plans. He said complaints were received by the residents and ODOT approved for the project to be redone.

The elevation of the sidewalk was lowered to be able to install ramps in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. Wetzer said the crews also will be able to further improve the water drainage.
Wetzer said the work does not include any additional money from ODOT and falls under the same contract as the work completed in 2018.
He said other work seen in the area, including work to the street’s curbs, would have been completed in 2018 but the crews ran out of favorable weather to work in.
“If we would’ve had two more weeks of good weather, this would have been done last year,” he said.
He added some work is typical follow up work, such as repairing curbs damaged from the weather or snow plows during the winter months.
With favorable weather, Wetzer said the crews should be able to complete their work in approximately one week.
After the work is completed, subcontractors will reseed grass in the areas and paint necessary street lines and markings.
