The village of Crestline will celebrate one of its most beloved heroes the first weekend in October. Gates Brown Appreciation Weekend is slated for Oct. 3, 5 and 6.
Proceeds from the event and its activities will be used to help offset medical costs incurred by Brown who has been hospitalized for eight weeks as a result of complications from diabetes. Activities scheduled include a Texas Hold ’Em poker tournament, a spaghetti dinner with live and silent auctions, and a golf tournament.
Following his three-sport high school career at Crestline, Brown played professional baseball for the Detroit Tigers from 1963 to 1975 and established himself as one of the game’s all-time great pinch-hitters. Brown still holds records for most career pinch-hits, most pinch-hit home runs and pinch-hits in one season.
