CRESTLINE — The Crestline Village Council held its regular meeting Tuesday evening. To start, council voted to table Ordinance No. 3260 for now.
The ordinance would amend section 721.08 titled Hauling Refuse, of chapter 721, titled Waste Collection of the Codified Ordinances of the Village of Crestline. The section that is to be amended would make it so that no waste may be collected before 6 a.m.
Lewis and Margaret Kurtzman, owners of Kurtzman Sanitation, addressed council on the issue.
“I just don’t understand what’s going on here — first I hear that it’s a container, then I heard it was a truck,” Lewis Kurtzman said. “I bought all new trucks in the last five years, and they’re supposed to be quieter, and I bought smaller trucks. I just wish people would come to me — I don’t like trouble —— come to me and talk to me and I’ll take care of it. I’ve been in business for 44 years, and now we’re having a problem? I just wish I knew what was going on so we can fix it.”
“We understand that people are complaining that we are starting our business too early and that the trucks may be making too much noise and it wakes them up,” Margaret Kurtzman said. “We are running a business and at certain hours of operation to get the job done. Our village has necessary workers who need to get their jobs done. They use equipment during the day, such as street cleaners, tree choppers, jackhammers, firemen and policemen have to use their sirens, trains come through our community blowing horns next to residential homes, all because they have important jobs.
“Do we change their schedules that they have in order to get their jobs done in an orderly operation?” she asked. “My point is that some people sleep nights, and some people sleep days and must try to sleep during the days while people in the community go about our business.”
Kurtzman Sanitation workers usually begin work around 4 a.m. This start time accommodates any unforeseen circumstances, such as broken machinery that could need repaired, weather to name two.
Also at the meeting, it was announced that despite the harvest festival being canceled, there will be a First Responders Appreciation Day where the firemen will still have their pancake breakfast and the police department will have their car show on from 7-4 on September 19, which would have been the Saturday of the festival.
There will be a craft show that day at the gazebo, and funds from the spot fees from that will be put donated to the police and fire departments. There will also be a few different food trucks from Crestline set up for people to enjoy, and the high school is looking to get a dunk tank to raise money for the athletic program. There will also be a bicycle decorating competition for children.
Council passed two resolutions to employ Fredrick Rosch as a full-time police officer, and Zachary Gregory as a part-time police officer.
Crestline’s Arbor Day celebration will be held on September 22 at 7 p.m. There will be two trees planted outside of council chambers — one in memory of Bob Ruhe and one for Kelly Kurtzman.
Council canceled the meeting that was scheduled near Labor Day, so the next meeting will be September 15.
