Spring has definitely sprung and right along with it are those oh-so-familiar spring rain showers.
As we prepare for summer, remember to maintain the storm water drainage on your property. Ensure that gutters are clean and free of debris left from last fall and winter. Likewise, ensure that the street grates in front of your home are free of debris and trash.
This is a great time to recycle those semi-composted leaves and place them on the garden or in your compost pile. Don’t forget to clean and inspect your rain barrel to insure that it will function properly for your upcoming gardening activities.
As you are planning your flower beds and landscaping this spring, consider installing a rain garden. Rain gardens pull double duty around your home: they are full of colorful, flowering plants that add beauty to the landscape and they store and recycle storm water. Rain gardens are a great way to filter runoff and keep pollutants out of our rivers and streams.
The Crawford Soil and Water Conservation District has grant funds to assist Bucyrus residents interested in planting a rain garden on their property. For information on the grant or for more tips on how to recycle storm water on your property, contact the Crawford SWCD at 419-562-8280 or visit online at www.crawfordswcd.org.
