BUCYRUS—It is best to give a bit of thought on where trees will actually work best for you in your landscape before planting. Trees can benefit you all year round if in its proper place. The diagram is a great representation on locations for different heights of trees around a home. Remember to always call before you dig to OUPS (Ohio Utility Protection Services) at 811 or 1-800-362-2764, so that your fun day of landscaping doesn’t turn into disaster! Also, be mindful of any tile or septic systems in your yard.
Planting shrubs near your air conditioner will help shade it, and keep it cooler so that it works more efficiently. Plant deciduous trees on the south and west side of your house to keep your house cool in the summer, and allow the sun to warm in the winter. Plant evergreens on the north and west side of the house to help keep snow away from your house and prevent winter’s cold winds direct access to your house.
It is also important to be cognizant of the different fruits, acorns, or pinecones trees will produce that you will have to live with. Also, research the wildlife that may visit your yard if that is your interest. Looking at the mature shape of the tree may be of interest to you too, to see if you will have to do much pruning or mother nature takes care of it for you.
