CRAWFORD COUNTY, OH (CRAWFORD COUNTY NOW)—While field construction season has concluded, the Crawford County Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) is shifting its focus to winter education, announcing two major seminars aimed at land preservation and high-tech nutrient management.

The first program, held in partnership with the Western Reserve Land Conservancy, is scheduled for Jan. 29 at 6 p.m. at the Bucyrus Public Library. The informational session will cover conservation easements—legal agreements that permanently protect farmland and timber from residential or commercial development while allowing owners to retain full property rights.

“Ag is our number one industry here in the county,” said Mike Hall of the Crawford SWCD. “This is a way to preserve our valuable farmland into perpetuity for the next several generations.”

On Feb. 9, the district will host its annual Winter Manure Management Meeting at the Whetstone Township Hall from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. This year’s event features Dr. John Fulton from Ohio State University, a specialist in artificial intelligence (AI) application in agriculture. The program will highlight the Harvest Lab 3000, a state-of-the-art system for liquid manure application.

In addition to the seminars, officials are urging residents to remain mindful of winter weather impacts. As “atmospheric winter” brings fluctuating temperatures, the SWCD advises homeowners to keep storm drains clear of snow to prevent street flooding and to use road salt sparingly to protect the water quality of the Sandusky River.
