CRESTLINE―The Crawford Park District is offering several events throughout December and has released the holiday hours for all of its parks.

Update: Two events have been added below and the Crawford Park District will not be holding a monthly meeting in December.  The next scheduled meeting of the Board of Park Commissioners will be held on Thursday, January 17, at 7:30 a.m. at the Lowe-Volk Park Nature Center.  For more information, please contact the Crawford Park District office at 419-683-9000.

Just Hike It: Saturday, December 15 at 10 a.m. at Lowe-Volk Park

There are many benefits to getting outside and taking a hike, such as lowering your blood pressure and cholesterol, to increasing happiness levels and curbing depression. Plus, there is always something new to see! Join Crawford Park District Naturalists on our monthly treks through the parks. We will also be doing photo journaling to document how the parks and trails change from season to season!

Night Sky: Saturday, December 15 at 6 p.m. at Lowe-Volk Park

The Crawford Park District invites you to join members of the Crawford Park Astronomy Club as they share their knowledge and telescope skills with all who are interested in the celestial sights. This month’s night sky feature showcases the Comet Wirtanen/46P. Discovered in 1948, Comet Wirtanen orbits the sun every 5.5 years.  It will pass Earth a mere 51 million miles away and will be visible with binoculars, and with a little luck, the unaided eye. The universe is an astronomical sight!

Nature Hike: Sunday, December 16 at 3 p.m. at Sears Woods, 1486 Mt. Zion Road

The Crawford Park District invites you to Sears Woods for a nature hike. Each winter brings with it a new set of challenges for all life forms. Food supplies vary from year to year and of course, the weather patterns play a key role in determining the makeup of winter bird communities. Meet Warren Uxley at Sears Woods State Nature Preserve and find out what this winter will bring. Sears Woods is located west of Bucyrus on Mt. Zion Road.

Wild Wednesday: Wednesday, December 19 at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. at Lowe-Volk Park

The Crawford Park District invites pre-schoolers to come to the Nature Center and enjoy an hour of nature exploration! Program topics will vary and may include a story, short hike, craft, or a visit from an animal. For pre-schoolers and their parents. Come dressed for the weather.

Sears Woods closing for deer hunt

The Crawford Park District is announcing the closing of Sears Woods State Nature Preserve on Saturday, December 15.  The Nature Preserve will be closed for a controlled deer hunt sponsored by The Division of Natural Areas and Preserves and the Crawford Park District. This hunt is only open to previously selected hunters. For more information or questions, call the Crawford Park District at 419-683-9000.

Movie in the Park on Friday, December 21 at 5:30 p.m. at Lowe-Volk Park

The Crawford Park District invites kids of all ages to wear your pajamas, bring your pillow and blanket and settle in for a couple holiday classic cartoon movies. We will have an activity, popcorn to snack on, and hot chocolate too!

Night Sky on Saturday, December 22 at 6 p.m.  at Lowe-Volk Park

The Crawford Park District invites you to join members of the Crawford Park Astronomy Club as they share their knowledge and telescope skills with all who are interested in the celestial sights. Targets for the fall months will include: m-42 is a great nebula in Orion, m-31 the Andromeda Galaxy, Hyades is an open cluster of stars and the Moon.  The universe is an astronomical sight!

Monday, December 24, Christmas Eve – open 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Tuesday, December 25, Christmas Day – Closed

Monday, December 31, New Year’s Eve – open 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Tuesday, January 1, New Year’s Day – Closed

The Nature Center will be open Wednesday, December 26 through Saturday, December 29 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Nature Center is closed on Sundays until April. All of the parks of the Crawford Park District are open year-round from sunrise to sunset. Enjoy a hike this holiday season.
