BUCYRUS, OH (CRAWFORD COUNTY NOW)—The Crawford Park District is welcoming the return of spring with a full slate of educational programs, family events, and the ongoing development of its newest nature preserve.
Lori Morey of the Crawford Park District recently joined “Community Spotlight” to highlight upcoming activities as the region transitions into “mud season.” Among the featured events is the “Floating Fairies” hike on Saturday, March 28, at Carpenter’s Bottom, where participants can learn about fairy shrimp, wood frogs, and salamanders.
The district’s April schedule includes an Earth Day exploration at Heckert Nature Preserve on April 22 and a wildflower walk at Sears Woods on April 25. Families can also participate in a high-tech GPS egg hunt at Lowe-Volk Park on March 29 or explore the Rock and Fossil Day on April 11.
Looking further ahead, the district will host its traditional bird banding and pancake breakfast on May 9, followed by the popular Living History Days on May 30-31.
Beyond public programming, the district is focused on the restoration of the Kurtzetter Nature Preserve, acquired in 2023. Currently closed to the public, the site is undergoing extensive cleanup of old structures and overgrowth. Once restored, the property is intended to serve as a space for outdoor education, hiking, and birdwatching.
Officials are currently seeking volunteers of all skill levels to assist with maintenance and cleanup projects across the district’s various properties.
