CRESTLINE- The very popular Rock n’ Fossil Day is happening from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. this Saturday at the Lowe-Volk Nature Center.
The event will offer displays of various rocks, minerals and gems from local collectors and members of the Richland Lithic and Lapidary Society. The Crawford Park District is also excited to announce that a Mastodon rib was recently found in Crawford County and will be on public display for the first time!
There will also be a presentation at noon by Tom Kottyan on Native Copper and the Secondary Copper Minerals. He’ll discuss how copper forms and becomes secondary minerals such as azurite and malachite.
People attending the event are encouraged to bring their rocks, fossils and gems for identification and prepare to have a rockin’ good time.
Lowe-Volk Park is located three miles north of US Route 30. For more information, contact the Crawford Park District office at 419-683-9000. Squirrels: 1 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 21 at Lowe-Volk Park
It’s National Squirrel Appreciation Day! Join Crawford Park District Naturalist, Lisa Bogard, at the Nature Center for a program about Sciuridae found in Ohio. There will also be a short hike through the park to look for signs of squirrels in the area.
Woodpeckers: 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 23 at Lowe-Volk Park
Woodpeckers are an extremely important group of birds: their impact ripples throughout the forest community they inhabit. Meet Crawford Park District Naturalist, Warren Uxley, at the Lowe-Volk Nature Center for a PowerPoint program on the 10 Woodpecker species that live in the eastern U.S.
Wild Wednesdays: 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 24 at Lowe-Volk Park
Come to the Nature Center and enjoy an hour of nature exploration with Crawford Park District Naturalist, Josh Dyer! Program topics will vary and may include a story, short hike, craft, or a visit from an animal for pre-schoolers and their parents. Come dressed for the weather. Morning and afternoon programs will be similar, just choose the time that best fits your schedule.
National Seed Swap Day from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Jan. 27 at Lowe-Volk Park
The Crawford Park District invites you to stop by the Nature Center to pick up a few native plant seeds for National Seed Swap Day! Examples of what will be available are Common Milkweed, Blazing Star, Joe-Pye Weed, and Mountain Mint. You do not need to bring seeds to trade, but we will gladly accept a smile, a kind word or a birdseed donation for the swap.
Photography Exhibit featuring the work of Jim McCormac: Saturday, January 27 through Saturday, February 24 at Lowe-Volk Park
The Crawford Park District welcomes guest presenter Jim McCormac. The public is invited to come and see nature through the lens of Jim McCormac. From sweeping vistas to tiny organisms, Jim captures the essence of Ohio’s biodiversity.
A Romp through Ohio’s Biodiversity: 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 27 at Lowe-Volk Park
This winter’s photography exhibit by the Crawford Park District will feature the work of Ohioan Jim MCormac. Jim has spent a lifetime observing and studying nature in Ohio.
Viewing the Night Sky: 6 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 27 at Lowe-Volk Park
The Crawford Park District invites you to join members of the Lowe-Volk Astronomy Club as they share their knowledge and telescope skills with all who are interested in the celestial sights. Targets for the winter months will include: M-15 and M-22 Globular Clusters, Andromeda Galaxy, the great nebula of Orion, and our very own Moon. Bring your own telescope or allow the volunteers to assist you with those provided. It’s a spectacular universe!
