CRAWFORD COUNTY (CRAWFORD COUNTY NOW)—Get ready for a week of thrilling outdoor experiences brought to you by the Crawford Park District. From fire-starting techniques to haunted woods, a solar eclipse, nature photography, and canoeing, there’s something for everyone to enjoy in the coming days.

Flint & Steel Fire Workshop
Saturday, October 14, 10 am

On Saturday, October 14, at 10 am, head to Lowe-Volk Park for a unique fire-starting workshop. While there are various ways to build a fire, the flint and steel technique is sure to impress your campfire crew. Join Mr. Josh from the Crawford Park District as he demonstrates the necessary materials and methods to successfully start a fire using flint and steel. All materials will be provided for this informative and hands-on experience. Lowe-Volk Park is conveniently located just 3 miles north of US Route 30.

Haunted Headwaters Adventure
Saturday, October 14, 8 pm – 11:30 pm
Sandusky Headwaters Preserve, 2400 State Route 598

As night falls on the same day, the Crawford Park District invites brave souls to join them for a spine-tingling journey through the purportedly haunted woods of Sandusky Headwaters Preserve. The eerie mist surrounding the river adds an extra layer of mystery to this adventure. Participants will embark on a terrifying trek through the cursed woods and along the haunted Sandusky River. Keep your senses sharp, as you never know what might be lurking in the shadows, ready to make you jump and scream! The cost for this hair-raising event is $5 per person, with funds raised being divided between the Junior Naturalist Club and the brand-new archery range. Please note that this hike is not suitable for young children due to its steps and rocky terrain. No new hikes will commence after 11 pm. Sandusky Headwaters Preserve is conveniently located 3 miles north of US Route 30.

Annular Solar Eclipse Viewing
October 14, 11 am – 2:15 pm
Lowe-Volk Park, 2401 State Route 598

On the same day, the Crawford Park Astronomy Club will host a special event focused on the Annular Solar Eclipse. From 11 am to 2:15 pm, attendees can witness this celestial spectacle where 30-40% of the sun will be blocked. Solar glasses will be provided to ensure safe viewing. Additionally, the Astronomy Club will set up solar telescopes for eclipse enthusiasts. This is a drop-in event, as the eclipse is set to begin shortly after 11 am and conclude around 2:15 pm. Lowe-Volk Park is the ideal location for eclipse observation.

Nature Photography Workshop
Sunday, October 15, 1 pm – 3 pm

For those who love capturing the beauty of nature and wildlife through their lenses, the Crawford Park District has a special treat in store on Sunday afternoon. Join the district for a Nature Photography Workshop from 1 pm to 3 pm. Whether you’re using your smartphone or a traditional 35mm camera, you’ll explore various methods for taking stunning nature photos, including landscape, close-up, nature and wildlife action, flash, and night photography. The workshop will also cover camera equipment and photo editing software. The highlight of the day will be a nature hike, offering plenty of opportunities to take fantastic photos while enjoying the great outdoors. And did you know that flint is harder than the steel it strikes? The friction generated by striking the two materials together shaves off a piece of iron, igniting the carbon within the steel to create a spark.

Canoeing Adventure
Wednesday, October 18, 5 pm
Neff Reservoir, State Route 98, East of Bucyrus

Finally, on Wednesday, October 18, at 5 pm, the Crawford Park District invites you to join them for a late-morning canoeing adventure at Neff Reservoir, located east of Bucyrus on State Route 98. Before embarking on your paddle, you’ll receive instructions on canoeing basics and safety. Please wear shoes that can get wet, and rest assured that all necessary equipment will be provided. This event operates on a first-come, first-served basis, with no advance registration required.
