Unwanted items for some became treasures for new owners Saturday, as the the Crawford County Suicide Prevention Coalition’s first countywide garage sale and flea market was held at the Crawford County Fairgrounds.
The garage sale and flea market took place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Crawford County Suicide Prevention Coalition representative Ginger Gamble explained why the group put together the sale.
“We have a walk every year to raise money for Suicide prevention, and our walk this year was real rainy and cold day. So we didn’t take in as much money as we would like to,” Gamble said. “We screen all the schools in the county, and last year it cost us $9,000 to do that. Well, we only made about $5,000. So we decided we had to do something else to raise the money so we decided to do a community wide garage sale and flea market.”

Gamble added that the screening has been working.
“Last year we only had one teen suicide last year, because of our program that we are doing, and that was in the one school that wouldn’t let us in,” Gamble explained.
Selling a few items as well as purchasing a few items Ruth Brewer along with daughter Stephanie Duncan and granddaughter Marianna Duncan enjoyed the garage sale.
“It has been nice, we had quite a few people this morning. We bought this little bear costume, and everything was reasonable today,” Brewer said. “We saw a lot of our stuff go.”
“We were happy to get rid of it,” Stephanie added.
Robin Hammond was selling a few items at the flea market. Hammond explained what motivated them to become vendors.
“We wanted to try out doing flea markets, and the suicide prevention seemed like a good cause,” Hammond said.
The Crawford County Suicide Prevention Coalition will be hosting a BBQ Chicken Dinner on October 15 at the ADAMH Board on North Sandusky Street in Bucyrus.
