CRESTLINE — Crestline Village Council’s first meeting of the new year was off to a slow start with the absence of one of its members.

Allen Laferty could not attend the meeting, and according to village solicitor Rob Ratliff, there must be at least five out of six members present to vote to change the rules to approve legislation as an emergency.

“You only need two-thirds of members to vote for emergency legislation but to pass the rule change to allow it, you need three-quarters present to vote,” Ratliff said.

One seat on council remains vacant while council president Joy Miley fills the acting mayor position until the end of the year.

Council member Gene Toy made a motion for council to have a special meeting Monday, Jan. 14 at 6 p.m. to approve the three resolutions that had been up for a vote on the evening’s agenda.

Those include the mayor’s appointments of Richard S. Liptak and Scott Taylor as full-time police officers for the village and her appointment of village administrator John Rostash and fiscal officer Sherry Winch as delegates to the RITA Council of Governments.

All three pieces of legislation will be voted on at the Jan. 14 meeting.

Also, during the meeting, Mike Kelly, commander of the Crestline Veterans of Foreign Wars No. 2920, invited council members and the general public to an open house at the VFW on Feb. 22 and a formal dinner on Feb. 23 to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the club.

The next regular meeting of the council is Jan. 21 at 6:30 p.m.
