BUCYRUS — The draining of the Pines Reservoir was one of the main topics discussed at the Bucyrus City Council meeting Tuesday evening.

According to Bucyrus Mayor Jeff Reser, the valves would not open, but after repairs were made, the pipes finally began to drain.

“It is draining slowly, and we have been in communication with ODNR (Ohio Department of Natural Resources),” Reser said.

Bucyrus City Law Director Rob Ratliff said a trial with ODNR still is scheduled for Oct. 22 but he is hopeful it will be cancelled since the city is working toward being in compliance with the draining of the reservoir.

Matt Crispin, Superintendent of Bucyrus City Schools, came to the meeting to invite city council members and residents to participate in activities at the high school and elementary school.

“We are always in need of mentors and volunteers,” Crispin said.

Reser said city officials enjoy a strong relationship with school districts in the area.

“Our relationship with the three school districts in our area is very important,” Reser said.

Reser also reminded residents that Spooktacular is occurring earlier than normal this year and will start at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 5 at Aumiller Park.

Council approved several pieces of legislation, including an ordinance regarding permanent sign regulations for businesses in the downtown area.

“Did any of the committee members talk with any of the business owners about this,” council member and platting committee member Dan Wirebaugh asked.

Platting committee chair Mark Makeever said no business owners were consulted and none attended the meeting at Schines Park.

Wirebaugh was the only member to vote against the passage of the ordinance.

Other ordinances approved by council included traffic map changes, appropriations, changes for non-conforming residential lots and a transfer of funds.

Council’s joint committee meeting is Thursday at 6 p.m. at Bucyrus City Hall. Topics to be discussed include demolition of derelict houses, three appropriations, softball field usage, the mill and pave schedule, CSO No. 6 and a charging station at Millennium Park.

Council’s next meeting is Oct. 15 at 7 p.m.
