BUCYRUS — Bucyrus City Council members were informed on some upcoming projects to come to Bucyrus.

The council meeting had no legislation on the agenda for consideration.

During the meeting, Bucyrus Mayor Jeff Reser informed council of two grants coming to the city.

Bucyrus is set to receive a grant for $125,000 for a permanent stage to be built at Schines Art Park.

According to Reser, the Ohio Regional Development Corporation, the organization responsible for the grant to build Schines Art Park, also is the grant provider for the stage.

Reser said the stage will be on the east side of the park and will face west into the park. He said he is hopeful the stage will be completed by the end of May 2019.

The second grant, one for $25,000, is for an engineering study to be completed on the possibility of hanging one or two arches over Sandusky Avenue.

Reser said the arch or arches would be bicentennial themed and would have the years 1821 and 2021 in the wording to celebrate the city’s bicentennial.

“I think it would be a nice birthday present for the city,” Reser said. “We have an attractive downtown, and we need to keep it that way.”

Reser said the arch would be similar to that found in the Short North in Columbus.

He said he’d like two arches, one at South Sandusky Avenue and Marion Road and another at the intersection Sandusky Avenue and Charles Street.

The $25,000 grant funds just the engineering study.

Also during the meeting council member Mark Makeever informed his fellow members that a house at 316 Woodlawn Avenue would be torn down in the coming weeks.

The structure, which sits across the street from Bucyrus Elementary School, has the deadline to be demolished by Aug. 20. Makeever said the deadline was made due to school starting for Bucyrus City Schools on Aug. 22. Makeever said that includes filling in the basement.

He said the Board of Building Standards and Appeals handled the issue, but the owner’s attorney informed the board that the owner was set to tear down the building at his own expense.

The two grants will be discussed by the Bucyrus Public Lands and Buildings and Finance committees Thursday at 6 p.m. during the joint committee meetings.
