GALION — Airport renovations and liquor licenses were the focus of much of Galion City Council’s agenda during its meeting Tuesday evening.
During the meeting, council suspended rules on the first reading of an ordinance to rescind a 2018 grant to apply for a federal grant. Council also passed the agenda item by an emergency to reapply for the grant with revised information.
According to Galion Safety Service Director Nicole Ward, the former estimate for renovations to the Galion Municipal Airport was low due to three alternates, such as conduits and rotating beacons, not being included. The bids the city received, however, did include the alternates.
The original project estimate was $400,037 of the project. The new project estimate is $530,000. The Federal Aviation Administration funds are expected to pay $606,940 (90 percent) of the project and the city paying an expected $33,718.83 (five percent). Another five percent is expected to be paid for by the state.
Ward said the percentages of each entities share of the project remained the same with the cost adjustment. She said the city has approximately $600,000 saved in funds that may be used for projects like the airport restoration.
The project includes the capital improvement installation of runway, taxiway and guidance signing and to rehabilitate the runway, taxiway and apron at the Galion airport.
Council also passed by an emergency for $25,000 to be appropriated to the airport fund to purchase more fuel.
Galion Auditor Brian Treisch said recent favorable weather has allowed for many pilots to fly and purchase fuel at the airport, calling for more fuel to be purchased. He said the airport also has been a stop for refueling for out-of-town pilots.
In other business, council entered executive session to discuss pending or intermittent court action.
After exiting executive session, councilman Mark Triplett motioned to remove previous requests for a public hearing regarding a transfer of liquor permits from the former Geyer’s grocery store to Galion Fresh Market, a business interested in moving to the former Geyer’s location.
The motion to remove the request for a public hearing was passed, 7-0.
Council’s next meeting is Aug. 27 at 7 p.m.
