CRESTLINE, OH (CRAWFORD COUNTY NOW)—The Crawford Park District is seeking to revitalize its volunteer base as it enters 2026, citing a decline in long-term helpers due to an aging population and busy modern schedules.

Lori Morey, who joined the district as director six months ago, said volunteers have historically been the “heartbeat” of the park system, handling everything from trail maintenance and equipment repair to mowing and tree planting. With several veteran volunteers recently passing away or aging out of service, Morey is looking to “propped up” the base by attracting a new generation of supporters.

“It will literally shape the park district in the future depending on who we have come around,” Morey said during a recent community interview.

The district is highlighting flexible ways to help that go beyond traditional manual labor. Morey suggested “citizen science” opportunities, such as using the iNaturalist app to document local flora, or simply picking up litter during a daily walk. More structured roles include assisting at large events like the summer Water Carnival or joining specialized groups like the Crawford Park Astronomy Club.

Local students may also find opportunities to fulfill graduation requirements; Morey noted that some area schools, including Galion High School, now require volunteerism hours.

Prospective volunteers can fill out an interest form at crawfordparkdistrict.org or contact the park office at 419-683-9000 to discuss roles that match their skills and interests.
