BUCYRUS, OH (CRAWFORD COUNTY NOW)—The American Legion Auxiliary Unit 181 is calling on the community to support its 27th annual Make and Bake Auction on Saturday, Jan. 24, with all proceeds benefiting the Bucyrus Police Department K-9 Unit.

The event, held at the post on Rensselaer Street, features a variety of handcrafted wood crafts, stained glass, and homemade baked goods donated by local artisans and businesses. This year’s fundraiser takes on a specific mission: helping the city’s police department replenish its K-9 fund following the recent acquisition of its newest dog, Vader.

Bucyrus Police Officer Connor Teeters, a K-9 handler for the Bucyrus Police Department, said the fund is vital for covering high-cost equipment and potential medical emergencies for the department’s two dogs, Capone and Vader.

“We like to keep that fund as high as possible just in case something happens to one of the dogs,” Teeters said. “The biggest thing is the medical stuff—we really worry about the health of the dogs.”

Vader, a single-purpose narcotics dog, and Capone, a dual-purpose dog trained in both narcotics and suspect apprehension, are both expected to make an appearance at the auction.

Doors open at 5:30 p.m. at 123 E. Rensselaer St., with the live auction beginning at 6:30 p.m. Food, including sandwiches and snacks, will be available for purchase.
