BUCYRUS, OH (CRAWFORD COUNTY NOW)—Community members, local officials, and history supporters gathered Tuesday at the historic Crawford County Courthouse for a ribbon-cutting ceremony marking the start of Crawford County’s participation in the upcoming celebration of America’s 250th birthday.
Commissioner Larry Schmidt welcomed those in attendance and spoke about the importance of the Semiquincentennial, reminding guests that the nation was founded on the ideals of liberty, self-governance, and opportunity.
“Today, we honor that moment not just by looking back, but by celebrating how those ideals continue to live on in communities like ours right here in Crawford County,” Schmidt said.
The year 2026 will bring multiple milestones for the area, including America’s 250th birthday, Ohio’s 223rd birthday, and Crawford County’s 200th anniversary.
Schmidt also recognized the Crawford County History Alliance (CCHA), an organization made up of 14 historical and cultural groups committed to preserving and sharing the county’s history through educational programs, events, and community experiences.
In June 2024, the Crawford County Commissioners officially designated the History Alliance as the lead organization for the county’s America 250 celebrations.
“It was an easy decision,” Schmidt said, noting the group’s passion, expertise, and collaborative approach.
The Alliance has already begun preparing for the historic year. In 2025, CCHA hosted a Heritage Tree Planting at Heckert Preserve as part of a statewide effort that included all 88 Ohio counties planting trees as living tributes to liberty and independence. The organization also held a screening of the national documentary After Ike, which highlights the Lincoln Highway and features Bucyrus’ “Great American Crossroads” mural.
Looking ahead, the History Alliance will host a Birthday Bash Kickoff on Sunday, March 1, 2026, from 2 to 4 p.m. at The Hub in Crestline. The event will include historical displays, live music, and the launch of the 2026 CCHA “History Passports,” encouraging visitors to explore all 14 member sites. Birthday cake will be served in honor of the nation, the state, and the county.
“As we cut this ribbon today, let it stand as a symbol — not just of the past we honor, but of the future we’re building together,” Schmidt said.
The ceremony marks the beginning of a yearlong celebration expected to bring residents together while recognizing Crawford County’s role in the nation’s story.
