COLUMBUS, OH (CRAWFORD COUNTY NOW)—As National Work Zone Awareness Week begins, Columbia Gas of Ohio is reminding motorists to prioritize safety when driving through areas where road crews are working.
The theme for this year’s National Work Zone Awareness Week, which runs from April 21-25, is “respect the zone so we all get home.” This message underscores the critical need for drivers to be attentive and cautious in work zones to protect both themselves and roadside workers.
“In 2024, Columbia Gas of Ohio crews experienced 25 intrusions into our work zones, and we’re thankful those intrusions did not result in any injuries,” said Bob Heidorn, President & COO of Columbia Gas of Ohio. “When drivers speed through work zones or fail to observe the workers, they are literally putting lives at risk. We urge drivers to slow down and be patient so everyone can be safe.”
Columbia Gas of Ohio is emphasizing several crucial safety tips for drivers encountering work crews:
- Expect the unexpected: Be aware that normal speed limits may be reduced, traffic patterns could change, and workers may be present on or near the road.
- Slow down: Speeding is a primary factor in work zone accidents.
- Keep your distance: Maintain a safe following distance and avoid tailgating.
- Pay attention to signs: Observe all posted signs until you see one indicating you have left the work zone.
- Obey road crew flaggers: Flaggers have the same authority as regulatory signs, and drivers can be cited for disobeying their directions.
- Stay alert and minimize distractions: Focus entirely on the road. Remember that using or holding a cell phone while driving is illegal in Ohio.
