NORTH ROBINSON—On Monday night, the Colonel Crawford Board of Education held its monthly meeting.
With the upcoming anniversary of the passing of Coach Ryan Teglovic, the school is going to commemorate his legacy by naming the roadway that leads down to the stadium “Ryan Teglovic Lane.” Vasil’s will create a sign to put up in his honor.
The presentation of the sign will be at the May board meeting.
At the meeting, some students from this year’s kindergarten class presented to the board their ability to recognize letters and the sounds they make and put them together when different letter/word combinations are presented to them. Afterward, students demonstrated their reading skills by reading a small book to various board members or administrators.
Principal Cindy Voss told the board that with the Phonics First program, children are progressing more than they were before the program, “If a child only memorizes ten words, then they can only read ten words. If a child learns ten sounds or ten letters, then the child is able to read 350 three-sound words, 4,320 four-sound words, and 21,650 five-sound words. The children learn the first ten letters that they get introduced to, O, A, D, G, C, T, M, L, H, and N, then are able to put together the sounds into words.”
So far, the kindergarteners have learned twenty-seven sounds, including “sh,” “th,” and “ch.”
The board approved hiring a new head volleyball coach, Jaime Valentine, for the upcoming school year.
Valentine formerly served as the head coach at Galion for fourteen seasons.
The board approved the resurfacing of the all-weather track for $75,189. Vasco Sports Contractors, the company that put the track in nineteen years ago, will complete the project. To keep up with the track, it needs to be resurfaced every six years and was last resurfaced in 2017.
Academic awards night is May 15 at 7 p.m.
The next board meeting has been moved to May 15 at 6 p.m.
