Dr. Seuss and his characters are beloved by many generations, so it’s no wonder that the kids participating in Thursday’s Cloverbud Fun Day quickly took to making Shrinky Dinks and playing Seuss-themed games.

Cloverbud Fun Day in Bucyrus is a one-day camp for kids in kindergarten through second grades. The event is put on by members, leaders, and volunteers of 4-H, and is for the kids who are still too young to join, but they don’t need to have any affiliation with 4-H to register for Fun Day.

“Our main objective is for these kids to have fun while we’re also incorporating educational activities, and send them home with something to remember the day,” said Crawford County OSU 4-H Extension officer Allison Cooper, who has been working Cloverbud Fun Day for three years now.

This year a total of 64 kids attended Cloverbud Fun Day. It ran from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The theme was “Dr. Seuss” and each station was based after one of his books. For example, the recreation/games session was based on the book Hop on Pop, and there was also a Lorax-themed craft station for the kids to make Shrinky Dinks and learn about recycling.

Ryan Schieber was a first-timer at Cloverbud Fun Day, and was all smiles when asked about the event.

“I really like the games we play outside,” said Schieber.

Cole Hudson was on his second year of the event, and he too jumped at the chance to rave about Fun Day.

“My favorite part is making Shrinky Dinks,” said Hudson, as he proudly held up his arts and crafts.

Fun Day wouldn’t be possible without the almost 30 volunteers who attend, with ages ranging from 12-50.

Alexis Link, 18, has been in 4-H for about nine years now, and has been a camp counselor and member of the fair junior board.

“I love volunteering for this event and the kids are all great. It’s a long day, but we all have a bunch of fun,” said Link.
