BUCYRUS — Tory Hueber came to the Bucyrus City Council meeting Tuesday evening on behalf of Ohio State Auditor Keith Faber to present an award to a Bucyrus employee.
“I am here to present Bucyrus City Auditor Joyce Schifer with the Ohio Auditor of State Award with Distinction,” Hueber said.
She said Schifer received the award for her exemplary reporting of the city’s finances through Schifer’s annual financial report and compliance with applicable laws for the fiscal year ending in 2018.
Also during the meeting, Stephanie Miller of the Ohio Division of Forestry said she met with the Bucyrus Tree Commission and thanked them for their excellent work as a Tree City USA.
Verna Schifer, who is part of the Samuel Norton family, sent a letter thanking the city and Mayor Jeff Reser for contributing to the success of the Samuel and Mary Norton Day. The event was hosted at the Bucyrus Historical Society last week.
“The planting of trees in honor of Samuel and Mary touched my heart,” the letter read in part, referring to the planting of two trees at the Gay Street entrance of Aumiller Park in honor of the Norton family.
Reser said 12 more trees will be planted for each of the 12 children of Samuel and Mary Norton, who established the city of Bucyrus. He said Sam and Mary Norton Days were a huge success and a kickoff to the larger celebration of the city’s bicentennial in 2021.
Reser also read a report by city service-safety director Jeff Wagner in his absence which included that ground was broken recently at the former McFarland Trailer Park for a new Burger King restaurant on East Mansfield Street. He said the restaurant should be open by the end of the year.
Wagner’s report also addressed the latest update for the Pines Reservoir and read in part, “Pines Reservoir Number Two valves have been opened but are not working. We will be videotaping the valves to see if the problem is the valves or clogged pipes. We will keep you posted.”
Council passed ordinances to create a fund for the victim advocate, replace an ordinance relating to the annual appropriations in the law director fund for contractual services and various appropriations. A resolution to allow Schifer to pay Ohio Water Development Authority for services rendered in the amount not to exceed $3,680.
The Joint Council Committee Meeting is Thursday at 6 p.m. and the next regular council meeting is Oct. 1 at 7 p.m.
