Bucyrus Elementary School will welcome children’s authors Janet Stevens and Susan Stevens Crummel. Stevens, who last visited BES in 2009-2010, is a beloved children’s book illustrator. This year, she is bringing her sister and writing partner Susan.

Stevens and Crummel will spend time with the Elementary students during the morning of Sept. 23. Later that evening, they will conduct a Parent Workshop at the Elementary School from 6:15 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. The workshop is open to parents of students in preschool through fifth grade, and is designed to inspire and empower parents to help their children learn to be better readers.

According to librarian Diane Kaple, Stevens and Crummel were selected as this year’s authors, “because our students and teachers love their works, and the Right to Read Committee wanted to bring them to help extend the regular classroom learning environment.”

In addition to the workshop, attendees will also have the opportunity to purchase the authors’ books and have them autographed. A light snack will also be provided following the workshop

“Our Right to Read program is a monthly, year-long program designed to engage students in different reading activities,” Kaple said. “We are excited that they will not only spend time with our students, but that Janet and Susan are willing to spend time with parents to help them and give them ideas for helping their children.”

Funding for the Author Visit and Parent Workshop has been made possible by the support of the Bucyrus Elementary School Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO) and grant funds specifically designated for reading and parent activities.

“Our PTO does a terrific job supporting the teachers and students in our building,” Kaple said. “I am grateful for their funding of this event, and want to personally thank them for their unwavering support in educating the children in Bucyrus.”

Those interested in attending the Parent Workshop should RSVP by sending a note to school with the number of individuals attending the workshop, or send an email to dkaple@bucyrusschools.org with the aforementioned information.
