The fruits of Baconfest were revealed Friday afternoon as The North Central Ohio Media Group, comprised of WQEL, WBCO, and Crawford County Now, presented a check to the city of Bucyrus to bring a little Christmas cheer to the town.

The check, totaling $1,000, was raised from ticket sales to the Baconfest event held at Pickwick Place one week ago. The presentation occurred during a remote at City Hall on WQEL hosted by Davey Jones, Kim Goyer, and Claudia Spiegel. On hand for the check presentation was Bucyrus Service/Safety Director Jeff Wagner, and Planning and Zoning Administrator John Rostash. Wagner explained what the funds would be used for.

“We are going to light up the square for Christmas. We had to purchase the lights, and run the electric. So hopefully in the next week will have them up and have them ready for the downtown Christmas,” Wagner said.

Wagner was appreciative for the gesture.

“We couldn’t do it without donations like this from different organizations running different events, and really if you look at our town we run events in our town which is one of many things that makes us special,” Wagner said.

Also on hand for the check presentation was J.R. Jenney and Colby Bright from Ohio Specialty Service Motor Ranch, who raffled of a 2015 Harley Davidson XG500 at the Baconfest. Jenney explained that it was nice to give back to the community.

“That is part of why we did what we did, I think it is pretty cool,” Jenney said. “Our goal is to give back more to the community, and see what we can do to get more involved. I was raised and grew up here so it is nice to be able to give back to the community.”

North Central Ohio Media Group General Manager Goyer explained why the radio station donated the money.

“We had found out that it wasn’t in the city’s budget this year to do Christmas lights, and I had asked the mayor what is something on his wish list, and this was one of those items,” Goyer said. “So when we were putting together Baconfest with the help of Ohio Specialty Services Motor Ranch, we thought that this was something we could give back to our city. We are so proud to be local, what better gesture could we have than to also be a part of lighting the square for Christmas.”

The lighting of the square is expected to be completed in time for Candlelight Christmas event.
