The Ohio Association of Behavioral Health Authorities (OACBHA) awarded their 2014 Advocate of the Year award to Mary Jo Carle of Bucyrus. Carle is a retired alcohol and drug treatment professional and nurse. She serves as a member of the board of directors for the Crawford-Marion Alcohol, Drug Addiction and Mental Health Services Board as well as a board member for Together We Hurt, Together We Heal.
ADAMH Board director Jody Demo-Hodgins noted that Mary Jo is reliable, compassionate and community-minded. Her advocacy has centered on providing education and support for individuals struggling with addiction. In addition to her work on the ADAMH Board, she facilitates a support group for families and loved ones of those struggling with addiction. When needed, she has held meetings with legislators, provided local training; she developed community partnerships to increase community awareness about addiction. She has also made a special effort to reach the youth in our community.
Others recognized at the award luncheon included Representative Ryan Smith and Representative Nickie Antonio with awards for Legislative Excellence. U.S. Senator Rob Portman received the 2014 OACBHA President’s Partnering for Quality Award and Dr. Mark Hurst, the Medical Director of the Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services was presented the CEO’s Award for Distinguished Leadership.
