CARDINGTON—American Legion Jenkins-Vaughan Post 97 is planning a special Memorial Day observance.
“As we move into spring, we wanted to get you the first details about the 2022 Memorial Day Observances in Cardington. Last year was such a meaningful day as we rededicated our Civil War Soldier’s Monument and honored the memories of the 303 Cardington soldiers whose names adorn the statue,” a social media post stated.
“Thank you to everyone who took part, and we invite you to participate again this year.”
Fifty years ago, America was fighting the Vietnam War.
“Sadly, many of the veterans who returned to our communities were not given the respect and honor they deserved. This year, we want to honor their legacy and their memories by holding them in a special place of distinction on Memorial Day.”
To that end, they are inviting any and all service members who served between 1962 and 1975 to join them in Cardington this year. They may walk in the parade or ride on the wagon.
“In addition, if you would like to walk on behalf of a veteran who served during that period, we will create a placard with their name on it for you to wear and join the parade. At Glendale Cemetery this year, we will honor the memories of all veterans who have served our nation, and with a particular emphasis placed on recognizing those who served in the Vietnam Era.”
Memorial Day is May 30.
The Post says it will communicate additional details as it gets closer to Memorial Day but are asking those in the area to reach out to local Vietnam-era veterans and their families and invite them to participate for what promises to be “a meaningful and healing day for our community.”
