BUCYRUS—Vintage cars will be cruising into the town’s historic train station Memorial Day weekend for its first-ever car show.
The Bucyrus Preservation Society is holding its annual Hobo Day celebration this year with a twist – a display of classic cars from one of the biggest car clubs in the area, “The Eliminators.”
“Every year, we try to come up with some kind of a theme,” said John Cauvel, the car show’s organizer and a member of the Preservation Society. “The whole motivation is to get people to the train station and see it.”
The Hobo Day Car Show is slated for Saturday, May 27, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the restored Toledo & Ohio Central Train Station, 700 E. Rensselaer Street. So far, Cauvel said, more than 20 vehicles are registered for the show.
“There will be some higher-end vehicles even though it’s a smaller show,” said Cauvel, a car enthusiast himself. “But some guys this time of year are really itching to get their cars out so I’m sure they’ll just show up.”
Cauvel will also show up with his Chevy C10 Stepside, a saddle brown truck with an antique white roof and gleaming chrome that he spent six years restoring. He bought the pickup in 1986 while serving in the U.S. Air Force in Mississippi.
“I used it as a work truck at first and figured someday I would work on it,” Cauvel said of the vintage vehicle. “I had this image in my head of what I would do with it. I tell people it was the journey, not the end product, that’s most important.”
The first 20 cars registered for the show will get one-of-a-kind dash plaques, Cauvel said, featuring an image of the society’s restored Norfolk & Western caboose now docked at the depot. “It’ll be unique to any other car show.”
The event will also include guided tours of the 1892 train station and a video presentation of the 1969 cupola-style caboose showing how it was hauled across the street on a semi-trailer.
The caboose will also be open for visitors, Cauvel said.
As always, food trucks will be on hand that day, and craftspeople will be selling handmade items and gifts, Cauvel said. More information on the community event is available by calling 419-561-1066 or 419-569-2794.
