BUCYRUS — Hord Cares was created two years ago by the Hord Family Farms as a way for the family owned and operated business to give back to the community, and they have found a way to help others during this holiday season.

Hord Cares will be on Washington Square during Candlelight Christmas to “lend a helping ham.”

“Hord Cares was created a few years ago to help the community around our farm,” Becca Hord said. “We felt giving away a free ham would help Crawford County this Christmas season in a small way.”

Hord said her family plans to give away approximately 150 dinner hams.

“They can feed up to 12 people per ham,” Hord said.

Their team will be distributing the dinner hams along with special treats for children to all who drive through the square in Bucyrus during Candlelight Christmas. One Christmas bag will be given out per car while supplies last.

The annual Candlelight Christmas will begin at 5 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 6 and last until 8 p.m. in the downtown area.

As luminaries line the sidewalks of downtown Bucyrus, the event will feature carriage rides, holiday concessions, extended downtown business hours and visits with Santa at the Bucyrus Kiwanis Club’s Santa House in Schines Art Park.

Another new feature at Candlelight Christmas this year will be a temporary ice rink sponsored by FC Bank. It will be in front of Millennium Park and skates will be available for rental at no cost. Individuals are welcome to bring their own ice skates but figure skates are not permitted.

“Candlelight Christmas is a holiday tradition in our community,” said Tyler Jacobs, director of the Bucyrus Area Chamber of Commerce. “This is a community event that’s made possible by the businesses and organizations that come together to provide special experiences for families and individuals here. This year, we’re especially grateful for FC Bank’s generous donation of an ice-skating rink for the evening. We expect a great turnout, and we encourage our local businesses to reach out if they’re planning any activities so that we can help promote their efforts.”

Free horse-drawn carriage rides will be offered throughout the evening. The carriage will stop for pickups at Midwest Furniture at 310 S. Sandusky Ave.

Downtown businesses may pick up bags for luminaries at the Chamber office, located at 117 E. Mansfield St.
