Staff Report

BUCYRUS―Ohio regulations require all local health departments to develop an Operation and Maintenance (O&M) Program for the management of all household sewage treatment systems, along with providing system owner education.  The local health inspectors from Crawford County Public Health will be hosting a meeting at 5 p.m. on September 26, 2018, at the Bucyrus Public Library, 200 E. Mansfield St., Bucyrus, to discuss the Operation and Maintenance Program requirements and to gather input from rural homeowners that utilize a private sewage treatment system.

There are approximately 5,500 homes in Crawford County utilizing household sewage treatment systems that vary in age and type of system. Crawford County Public Health has property records and sewage system permits on file as far back as the 1940’s. Regardless of the age or type of system, homeowners are responsible to ensure their system is operating properly.

The meeting is open to all Crawford County residents that may be affected by the Operation & Maintenance Program. Owning and maintaining a sewage treatment system is a big financial investment in one’s property. Proper operation and maintenance of a sewage treatment system are important to ensure efficient operation that does not create a nuisance or pollute our water resources.
